History of Almont
The community of Almont was officially planned and mapped out in 1881. This happened on a piece of land known as the Fisher Ranch.
How Almont Got Its Name
It is believed that Samual Fisher, the owner of the ranch, named the town. He supposedly named it after a famous horse from Kentucky. This horse, named Almont, was the father of Fisher's favorite stallion.
Early Days and the Post Office
The Almont Post Office first opened its doors on March 6, 1882. In the late 1800s, Almont was an important spot for miners. They would bring the valuable ore they dug up to Almont. From there, the ore was loaded onto trains and sent to the nearby city of Gunnison.
Almont Today
Today, Almont is a quiet place. It has two resorts that are open all year round. A small number of people live in Almont permanently.
Geography of Almont
Almont is located in a scenic part of Colorado. You can find it on State Highway 135. It's about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of the city of Gunnison.
Where Rivers Meet
A special feature of Almont's geography is where two rivers come together. The Taylor River and the East River both flow into Almont. Right in Almont, these two rivers meet and become the Gunnison River. The Gunnison River then continues to flow southwest.
