The Railroad Era

  • In 1851, Alton Bay became the end point, or "terminus," for the Cochecho Railroad. This train line came from Dover.
  • Later, in 1890, this rail line became known as the Lake Shore Railroad. It even extended further west to Lakeport in Laconia.
  • However, the trains stopped running on this line in 1935.

  • Since 1872, large boats like the MS Mount Washington and older ships have regularly stopped at Alton Bay. These boats travel across Lake Winnipesaukee, making Alton Bay a key stop for lake adventures.
