Alviro Nathan Petersen (born 25 November 1980) is a former professional cricket player from South Africa. He was a right-handed batsman who played for the South Africa in Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 matches. He also played for many club teams, including the Highveld Lions in South Africa and several teams in England.

Alviro Petersen was known for his strong batting skills. He even captained the Highveld Lions team in South African domestic cricket. His career ended in 2016 when he faced a ban from playing cricket due to his involvement in a situation that went against the rules of fair play in a domestic tournament.

Playing for Clubs

Alviro Petersen grew up in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He started playing first-class cricket in 2001 for the Northerns cricket team.

Playing in England

In 2011, Petersen joined Glamorgan County Cricket Club in England. He became their captain for the 2011 season. He was the top scorer for Glamorgan in all their games that year. He even scored 210 runs in one match, which was his first double century! Because of his great performance, he was named Glamorgan's player of the year.

In 2012, Petersen played for Essex County Cricket Club for part of the season. He later joined Somerset for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

In 2015, he moved to his fourth English club, Lancashire. He continued to play well, scoring over a thousand runs in the 2016 County Championship. He also did great in shorter cricket games, including scoring a century against Leicestershire.

International Cricket Career

Alviro Petersen first played for the South Africa A team. Then, in 2006, he joined South Africa's main ODI team, playing two matches against Zimbabwe.

Test Debut and Centuries

In February 2010, he made his Test debut against India in Kolkata. It was a memorable start because he scored a century (100 runs or more) in his very first Test match! He was only the third South African player ever to do this.

He continued to play in several Test series for South Africa. In 2011, after playing very well in domestic games, he was called back to the South Africa team for a series against Sri Lanka. He scored his second Test century (109 runs) in that series.

Retirement from International Cricket

On January 6, 2015, after South Africa won a Test match against the West Indies, Petersen announced he was retiring from international cricket. He decided to focus on playing for English county clubs instead. He then signed a two-year contract with Lancashire.

In December 2016, Alviro Petersen was banned from playing cricket for two years by Cricket South Africa. This happened because of his involvement in a situation that went against the rules of fair play during a domestic T20 competition in 2015–16.
