Amberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is located in the Oberpfalz region, also known as the "Upper Palatinate". Amberg is roughly halfway between the cities of Regensburg and Bayreuth. In 2001, about 44,200 people lived in Amberg.
Amberg's History
Amberg has a long and interesting history, especially linked to mining. As early as 1270, the town became an important center for digging up iron ore. Iron ore is a type of rock from which we can get iron metal. Later, in the 1800s, a special type of oven called a blast furnace was built in Amberg. This large furnace was used to melt the iron ore and produce iron, which was very important for making tools and other items.
Friends Around the World
Many towns and cities around the world become "twin towns" or "sister cities" with each other. This means they form a special friendship to share culture, ideas, and even student exchange programs. Amberg is twinned with these towns:
Germany, Bad Bergzabern, Rhineland-Palatinate
Poland, Bystrzyca Klodzka (Habelschwerdt)
Italy, Desenzano
France, Périgueux
Greece Trikala
Czech Republic, Ústí nad Orlicí (Wildenschwert)
