Milium effusum, also known as American milletgrass or wood millet, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the grass family called Poaceae. You can find it growing naturally in damp forests across the Holarctic Kingdom, which includes many parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

The name effusum comes from Latin and means 'spreading loosely'. This describes how its seeds are scattered.

Where Does Wood Millet Grow?

This grass likes to live in damp places. You'll often find it in deciduous woods, which are forests where trees lose their leaves in autumn. It also grows on shaded banks. It prefers soils that are wet in winter, ranging from chalky to slightly acidic clay and loam. In western Scotland, it can even grow over rocks.

Where Can You Find This Grass?

Milium effusum is found in many parts of the world. It grows in the northern United States and Canada. In Europe, you can find it in places like Britain, but not typically in the Mediterranean region. Its range extends east all the way to Siberia and the Himalayas.

Growing Wood Millet in Gardens

There's a special type of Milium effusum called 'Aureum'. It has bright yellow leaves and is known as Bowles' golden grass. People often grow this plant in their gardens because it looks very pretty. In the United Kingdom, it even won a special prize called the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This award means it's an excellent plant for gardens.
