Amikwa people facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Amikwa (pronounced Ah-MIK-wah) were a group of First Nations people in North America. Their name, Amikwaa, comes from the Ojibwe language and means "Beaver People." This is because the beaver was an important animal to them. Europeans first learned about the Amikwa in the 1600s. They were part of the larger Anishinaabeg family of peoples, and they spoke a language similar to Ojibwe.

Who Were the Amikwa People?

The Amikwa were an important group of Indigenous people in the 17th century. They were known for their strong connections with other First Nations groups. Historical records, like the Jesuit Relations, sometimes called them the Nez Perce. This can be confusing, as there is another well-known Nez Perce people from the Pacific Northwest. However, these were two completely different groups.

Where Did the Amikwa Live?

The Amikwa lived in what is now Ontario, Canada. Their main home was along the northern shore of Lake Huron. This area was across from Manitoulin Island. They also lived along the Missisagi and French Rivers. Another important river for them was the Spanish River. In 1753, a historian named Bacqueville de la Potherie wrote that they lived near Lake Nipissing.

What Was Their Community Like?

The Amikwa were a large and powerful group. They had strong friendships and alliances with other First Nations.

  • They were close allies with the Nipissings.
  • They were also related to other groups like the Outchougai, Mandua, and Atchiligouan peoples.

These connections helped them in trade and during times of conflict.

What Happened to the Amikwa?

Over time, the Amikwa faced many challenges. They suffered greatly from diseases brought by Europeans. They also had many wars with the Iroquois Confederacy. These events caused their population to shrink dramatically. Eventually, the remaining Amikwa people joined with other groups. Most of them likely merged with the Nipissings or the larger Ojibwe nation. Their history became part of these other communities.
