Mohammad Aminul Islam (born 2 February 1968), often called 'Bulbul', is a famous former Bangladeshi cricketer and captain. He has been serving as the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board since May 2025.
Aminul Islam made history by scoring the very first century for the Bangladesh cricket team. This happened when Bangladesh played their first-ever Test match against India. He is one of only three cricketers in the world to score a century in both their own and their country's first Test match. He was a highly celebrated cricketer in Bangladesh before the country gained full Test status.

Early Cricket Days
Aminul Islam, known as Bulbul, started playing cricket after a football injury. Just two years later, he was playing for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Associates Young Cricketers' team. This was in the first-ever Youth World Cup in Australia. There, he took six wickets with his off spin bowling, including the wicket of famous cricketer Brian Lara.
In the same year, 1988, he played his first One Day International (ODI) for Bangladesh. This match was against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup in Chittagong. He scored 27 runs in that game. A year later, he scored a century in the U-19 Asian Cup against Malaysia. In 1995, he also scored a century against the England A team in a three-day match in Dhaka.
Playing in One Day Internationals (ODIs)
Bulbul's ODI career began in 1988 and lasted until 2002. However, he only played 39 ODI matches. This was because, before 2000, Bangladesh was not a full member of the ICC. This meant they didn't get to play many official One Day Internationals.
Over time, Bulbul's role in the team changed. At first, he was a lower-order batsman and an off-spin bowler. Later, he focused more on his batting. His highest score in an ODI was 70 runs, which he made against India in 1998. His best bowling performance was taking three wickets for 57 runs against Zimbabwe in 1997.
Playing in the ICC Trophy
Bulbul played for Bangladesh in three ICC Trophy tournaments: in 1990, 1994, and 1997. These tournaments were important for countries trying to qualify for the Cricket World Cup.
He didn't perform as well as expected in 1990 and 1994. However, in the 1997 tournament in Kuala Lumpur, he played very well in the important matches. In the semi-final against Scotland, he scored 57 runs. He also had a great partnership of 115 runs with Khaled Mashud. In the final match, he scored a quick 37 runs from 37 balls. He also shared a 53-run partnership with the team captain, Akram Khan.
As a Cricket Captain
Aminul Islam became the captain of the Bangladesh national team in 1998. He led the Bangladesh cricket team in the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

He has completed all three levels of coaching degrees from Cricket Victoria in Australia. He has also trained club teams in Melbourne and Sydney. In 2005, he finished the first two levels of instructing courses from Cricket Australia. He then worked for the Asian Cricket Council development program. In 2009, he completed the well-known Level-3 coaching course. During his eight years at the ACC, he led about 80 training courses in many countries. In 2016, he became the development manager for the ICC Asia region. He lives in Australia.
As a Cricket Leader
On May 30, 2025, Aminul Islam was chosen to be the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. This is a very important role in Bangladeshi cricket.
Football Career
Before he became famous in cricket, Aminul Islam also played football. He was a striker for Gendaria Famous Club in the Pioneer League. He was even the top scorer in that league once.
In 1986, he played for East End Club in the First Division. However, his team was moved down to a lower league. The next year, he joined Victoria SC. But he got a serious injury while playing against Mohammedan SC. This injury unfortunately ended his football career.
