Life and Career

Early Life and First Steps in Music

Amir Obè was born in Detroit, Michigan, and later moved to New York City. His mother is from Poland and is a music teacher, and his father is from Sudan. Growing up, Obè was inspired by musicians like Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West.

In high school, Obè was a talented basketball player. He was the point guard and shooting guard for his team and was named the best offensive player in his junior and senior years. While basketball was his main focus, he also started making music secretly. When he was about 16, he bought a computer microphone and recorded his first song.

After finishing high school, Obè decided to focus on a music career and moved to Brooklyn, New York. He started sharing his music on the website Myspace under the name Phreshy Duzit. He gained many fans and soon caught the attention of record labels. This led to him signing a deal with Atlantic Records. Around this time, he also became friends with the artist PartyNextDoor online.

Obè released his first EP, Brave New World, in 2011. Soon after, he left Atlantic Records because he felt the deal was not the right fit for him. He wanted to create a new sound. In 2012, he released his first mixtape, The New Religion, through his own independent labels.

Becoming Famous

In 2014, he changed his stage name to Amir Obè and released the mixtape Detrooklyn. The project was about his experiences growing up in both Detroit and Brooklyn. He said he felt the two cities were very similar.

Later that year, Obè's music reached Drake's manager, who told him that Drake was a fan of Detrooklyn. This was a huge moment for Obè. In 2015, he even helped produce the song "Star67" for Drake's project If You're Reading This It's Too Late.

Obè's popularity grew, and he released two more EPs: Happening in the Grey Area in 2015 and Won't Find Love in the Hills in 2016. He also worked with other artists, including his friend PartyNextDoor.

On December 1, 2016, Obè announced that he had signed with Def Jam Recordings, a major record label. His song "Wish You Well" was even featured in the video game Madden NFL 18.
