About Amir Obè

Early Life and Music Start

Amir Obè was born in Detroit, Michigan. He later moved to New York City. His mom is Polish and teaches music, and his dad is from Sudan. His dad loved listening to artists like Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West.

When Amir was growing up, he enjoyed playing football and riding his bike outside. In high school, he often traveled between New York City and Detroit to visit his sister. He was also a talented basketball player, playing both point guard and shooting guard. He was even named the best offensive player in his junior and senior years of high school.

When Amir was about 16 or 17, he bought a simple computer microphone. He secretly made his first song called "Step Your Swag Up." His parents didn't know about his music at first because basketball was his main focus. After high school, Amir decided to follow his dream of making music and moved back to Brooklyn.

Becoming Phreshy Duzit

Amir first gained attention as an artist under the name Phreshy Duzit on Myspace. He quickly gathered many fans and started releasing new freestyles every week. Record labels began to notice him and send him messages. Eventually, he signed with Atlantic Records.

When Amir was 18, he became friends with another artist, PartyNextDoor, on Twitter. At that time, PartyNextDoor was known as "Jahron B." Amir often sent him beats because he was always writing songs and producing music.

In 2011, Amir released his first EP, Brave New World, through Atlantic Records. The music on this EP was all produced by NYLZ. Soon after, Amir decided to leave Atlantic Records. He wanted to change his music style and do things his own way. In 2012, he released his first mixtape, The New Religion. He put it out through his own independent labels, Neighborhood PHCK$ and After Platinum Records. This mixtape featured other artists like Cory Gunz and Jon Connor.

Rising to Fame and Working with Others

In 2014, Amir changed his artist name to Amir Obè. This was when he released his mixtape, Detrooklyn. He said the name Detrooklyn came from feeling like Detroit and Brooklyn were similar places. It was a project about his life and ideas from his teenage years until then.

In late 2014, Oliver El-Khatib, who manages Drake, heard about Amir. He told Amir that Drake was a fan of Detrooklyn. Because of this, Amir sent Drake some of his music and got good feedback.

In 2015, Amir helped produce a song called "Star67" for Drake's album, If You're Reading This It's Too Late. There was a rumor that Amir signed with Drake's OVO Sound label, but Amir confirmed it wasn't true. Amir also opened for PartyNextDoor on tour, and they worked together on several songs.

Amir released his second EP, Happening in the Grey Area, in December 2015. This album included songs with PartyNextDoor and Eli Sostre. In March 2016, he released his third EP, Won't Find Love in the Hills.

In December 2016, Amir Obè announced that he had signed with Def Jam Records. His song "Wish You Well" was even featured on the soundtrack for the video game Madden NFL 18.

Recent Music: Can't Be A ____ Here and after.

In 2018, Amir Obè released a series of EPs called Can't Be A ____ Here. These were all released through Def Jam Recordings. The main song from this series was "Holy Sh*t."

In 2020, Amir worked with producer Blitz//Berlin on a song called Shadow. This song was used in a trailer for the HBO TV show Lovecraft Country.

After three years without new music, Amir started teasing his fans with posts online. In 2023, he released his first new song, IGNITE + GOODNIGHT. Soon after, he dropped his eighth EP, titled before., which had three songs and another appearance from PartyNextDoor. The title of this EP hinted at his first full album, after., which he released a week later.
