This peak was once known by a different, disrespectful name. But in 2020, it was officially renamed Anû Kathâ Îpa. This new name was chosen with help from the Stoney Nakoda people, making it culturally appropriate and respectful.

Anû Kathâ Îpa is part of the Fairholme Range. It stands about 2,514 meters (8,248 feet) tall. This mountain is located in Kananaskis Provincial Park. It rises about 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) above the Bow River valley.
The peak is situated northwest of Mount Lady Macdonald. It is also just east of the entrance to Banff National Park. It's a smaller peak that stands out from the main Mount Charles Stewart summit.
A New, Respectful Name
For a long time, this mountain had a name that was considered offensive. It was seen as both racist and disrespectful to women. People felt it was important to change the name to something more appropriate.
In 2020, efforts began to find a new name. The Stoney Nakoda First Nation, who are the original people of this land, were asked for their help. They suggested "Anû Kathâ Îpa," meaning "Bald Eagle's Peak."
This new name was officially approved on September 29, 2020. It reflects respect for Indigenous culture and the natural beauty of the area. It's a great example of how places can be renamed to be more inclusive.
Exploring the Mountain
For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, Anû Kathâ Îpa offers a challenging climb. The easiest way to reach the top is by a route called a "scramble." A scramble means you need to use your hands for balance and sometimes for climbing.
This route is considered moderately difficult. It's very important to only try this climb when the weather is dry. Wet conditions can make the path slippery and dangerous. Climbers are advised to be careful and follow specific paths for safety.
