What is the Ananas Genus?
The Ananas genus is part of the larger Bromeliaceae plant family. This family includes many interesting plants, like air plants and other tropical species. Ananas plants are known for their tough, spiky leaves and unique fruit. They are native to the warm, tropical parts of South America.
Species of Ananas
The Ananas genus has only two main types, or species, of plants. Both are fascinating and have their own special features.
The Pineapple (Ananas comosus)
The most well-known species is Ananas comosus, which is the pineapple. This plant gives us the sweet and juicy fruit we love to eat. Pineapples are originally from the area east of the Andes mountains. This region stretches from northern South America all the way to northern Argentina. People around the world now grow pineapples in many tropical places.
The False Pineapple (Ananas macrodontes)
The other species is Ananas macrodontes, often called the false pineapple. While it's related to the true pineapple, its fruit is not usually eaten. This plant grows naturally along the coast of Brazil. It is also found in the river basins of the Parana and Paraguay rivers, extending into northern Argentina.
