Andrew Austin Hawkins (born March 10, 1986) is a former professional football player from America. He played as a wide receiver. Andrew played for six seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. Before that, he spent two seasons with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL). While in the CFL, he helped his team win two Grey Cup Championships in a row. He also signed with the New England Patriots in 2017 but decided to retire before training camp started. Andrew played college football for the Toledo Rockets from 2004 to 2007.

Early Life and High School

Andrew Hawkins grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He went to Bishop McCort High School there. In high school, Andrew was a talented athlete. He played football as a running back. In his senior year, he ran for 562 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. He was recognized as one of the best defensive backs in the state.

Andrew also ran track and field. He was very fast, running the 100 meters in 11.33 seconds. He also competed in jumping events like the long jump and triple jump.

College Football Career

After high school, Andrew went to the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. He played for the Toledo Rockets football team. What was special about Andrew is that he played two different positions: wide receiver and cornerback. He was the first player in 48 years at Toledo to play both offense and defense!

During his four years in college, Andrew played in 37 games. He caught 67 passes for 1,107 yards and scored five touchdowns as a receiver. As a cornerback, he helped his team by forcing two fumbles and blocking one punt. He also made 21 tackles.

Professional Football Journey

After college, Andrew tried to join the NFL. He worked out with the Cleveland Browns in 2008 but was not signed. He didn't play football at all during the 2008 season.

Playing in Canada

On December 5, 2008, Andrew signed with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Before his first CFL season, he tried out for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster on a TV show called 4th and Long. He was the runner-up on the show.

Andrew then played for the Alouettes for two seasons. He scored his first CFL touchdown in October 2009. Even though he had 41 catches and 5 touchdowns, he was a key part of the team. He helped the Alouettes win two Grey Cup championships in a row!

Joining the NFL

After his time in Canada, Andrew signed with the St. Louis Rams of the NFL in January 2011. However, he was released from the team a few months later.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals picked up Andrew in August 2011. He played his first game for them in the preseason. Andrew was initially released but then re-signed to the team's practice squad. He later joined the main roster.

In 2011, Andrew caught 23 passes for 263 yards. He became a "fan favorite" among Bengals fans, who called him "Baby Hawk." In 2012, he had a great season, playing in 14 games. He caught 51 passes for 533 yards and scored four touchdowns.

In 2013, Andrew had an ankle injury before the preseason. He returned later in the season and played in eight games, catching 12 passes for 199 yards.

Cleveland Browns

Andrew signed with the Cleveland Browns on March 12, 2014. The Bengals decided not to match the offer, so Andrew officially became a Brown. He signed a four-year contract. In his first year with Cleveland, Andrew led the team with 63 catches for 824 yards and two touchdowns. He was placed on injured reserve in December 2015. The Browns released him in February 2017.

New England Patriots

On May 24, 2017, Andrew signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots.

Retirement

Just a few months later, on July 25, 2017, Andrew Hawkins announced he was retiring from the NFL.

Personal Life and Education

Andrew Hawkins comes from a family of football players. His older brother, Artrell Hawkins, also played in the NFL. His cousin, Geroy Simon, played in the CFL, and another cousin, Carlton Haselrig, played in the NFL.

Andrew is a Christian. He has often spoken about how his faith has guided him. He believes his journey in football, including the challenges, made him a better person.

In 2017, Andrew earned a master's degree in sports management from Columbia University. He achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA!

After Football: Film and Television

After retiring from football, Andrew started a career in film and television.

  • Andrew is now a host on SportsCenter on Snapchat.
  • He also co-hosts a football podcast called the "Thom & Hawk Football Show" with his former teammate, Joe Thomas.
  • Andrew hosts the Discovery Channel's reality competition TV show Dodgeball Thunderdome with YouTube star David Dobrik and Erin Lim.
  • Since July 2021, he has co-hosted the variety program "Roku Recommends" with actress Maria Menounos.
