Biography
Early Life and Family
Andrey Lukanov was born in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. His father, Karlo Lukanov, was a Bulgarian communist who had moved away from Bulgaria.
When Andrey was six years old, his family moved back to Bulgaria. This happened after the communists took power in 1944. His father became an important leader in the communist party. He even served as Bulgaria's foreign minister from 1956 to 1961.
Political Journey
Andrey Lukanov joined the Communist Party in 1963. He began a career working for his country in other nations. He helped represent Bulgaria at the United Nations and in an economic group called Comecon.
He moved up in his career and became the minister for foreign economic affairs in 1987. He left this role in 1989. Lukanov became a key member of a group within the party that wanted changes. He was involved in the removal of the long-time leader, Todor Zhivkov.
Lukanov became Prime Minister on February 3, 1990. He held this important job until December 7, 1990. While he was Prime Minister, the Communist Party changed its name. It became known as the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
First Democratic Election
Andrey Lukanov was in charge during Bulgaria's first democratic election since 1931. This election happened in June 1990. The Bulgarian Socialist Party remained the largest party in the country's parliament. Lukanov continued to be part of the government.
Lukanov wanted to work with the opposition parties. He hoped to form a stable government together. However, the opposition did not agree. They felt the former Communist Party should take responsibility for past problems and the country's struggling economy.
Lukanov's time as Prime Minister was difficult. There were many problems with goods for people to buy, and there was public unhappiness. Finally, in December, after large protests and a big workers' strike, Lukanov resigned. This allowed a new government, led by Dimitar Popov, to be formed.
Later, in 1992, Lukanov faced questions about some of his business dealings. He was arrested, but the questions were soon dropped. During his time working with other countries, Lukanov had made connections with business people from Western countries.
Death
Andrey Lukanov died on October 2, 1996. He was shot outside his apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria. A person shot him and then ran away. The person was never caught.
Investigation
A builder named Angel Vassilev was arrested and questioned about Lukanov's death. Others were also involved in the investigation. After a long court case, and an initial finding, the Bulgarian Court of Appeal decided that Vassilev and the other people were not responsible.
Before Lukanov's death, there had been rumors that something bad might happen to him. Even today, the people truly responsible for his death are still unknown.
