Early Life and Education
Angelino Alfano was born in Agrigento, Sicily, on October 31, 1970. His father, Angelo Alfano, was a lawyer and also involved in local politics. His father was even a deputy mayor of Agrigento.
Angelino Alfano studied law at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. He also earned a special degree in company law from the University of Palermo. Like his father, he began his political journey with the Christian Democracy party.
Political Career
After some years with the Christian Democracy party, Angelino Alfano joined Forza Italia in 1994. This was a new political party started by Silvio Berlusconi. Alfano was elected to the Agrigento Province Council. In 1996, he became the youngest person elected to the Sicilian Regional Assembly.
In 2001, he became a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. This happened after his political group won the general election that year. From 2005 to 2008, he also led the Forza Italia party in Sicily.
Minister of Justice Role

After the 2008 elections, Alfano was again elected to Parliament. In May 2008, at 37 years old, he became the youngest Minister of Justice in Italy's history.
During his time as Justice Minister, a law called the Lodo Alfano was introduced. This law gave special protection from legal action to the four highest political leaders in Italy. However, this law was later found to be against the Italian Constitution in October 2009.
In 2011, Angelino Alfano was chosen to be the Political Secretary of the People of Freedom party. His job was to help reorganize and lead the party.
Minister of the Interior Role
On April 24, 2013, Enrico Letta was asked to form a new government. This happened after a period of political difficulty in Italy. On April 27, Letta formed a government with support from different political groups. Angelino Alfano became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in this new government.
In November 2013, Alfano decided to leave Berlusconi's party. He and other ministers formed a new party called New Centre-Right. They wanted to continue supporting Enrico Letta's government. Most members of this new party came from Christian democratic backgrounds and from southern Italy.
In February 2014, Matteo Renzi became the new Prime Minister. Angelino Alfano was kept on as the Minister of the Interior in Renzi's government.
As Minister of the Interior, Alfano faced challenges with people arriving in Italy without permission. Many people were seeking safety due to conflicts in places like Libya and Syria. Italy launched a rescue operation called Operation Mare Nostrum to help people in the Mediterranean Sea. Later, this was replaced by a European effort called Operation Triton.
In April 2015, a very sad event happened in the Mediterranean Sea. A ship carrying many people sank, and over 700 people lost their lives.
In November 2015, six people linked to the Sicilian Mafia were arrested. They were accused of planning to harm Alfano.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Role

In December 2016, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi resigned. Paolo Gentiloni then became the new Prime Minister. Angelino Alfano was appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, taking over from Gentiloni.
In March 2017, Alfano and other important members of his party formed a new political group called Popular Alternative. Alfano wanted to work with his former colleague Silvio Berlusconi's party. However, he did not want to join forces with other parties he considered too populist.
In December 2017, Alfano announced that he would not run in the 2018 general election. His party was divided on which political side to support. Some members of his party later joined a center-left group.
