He was famous for his work in applied statistics, especially on something called the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. He often worked with another well-known scientist, Ronald Fisher.

Anil Kumar Gain earned his Ph.D. (a very high university degree) from the University of Cambridge in England. His teacher was Henry Ellis Daniels, who was the head of the Royal Statistical Society at that time. Gain was also honored as a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and the Cambridge Philosophical Society.

He was the president of the statistics section of the Indian Science Congress Association. He also led the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Later, he started Vidyasagar University. He named it after Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a famous social reformer from the Bengali Renaissance.

Early Life

Anil Kumar Gain was born on February 1, 1919, in a small village called Lakkhi. This village is in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, India. His family was not wealthy. Anil started his education at a local informal school. When he was eight years old, he joined a regular school. He really enjoyed English and mathematics in school. His mother was his first teacher in these subjects. After finishing school, he went to Kolkata to study mathematics at Surendranath College. Then, he earned a master's degree in applied mathematics from Rajabazar Science College at the University of Calcutta. He was awarded the University Gold Medal in 1943 for being the best student.
