Annabeth Gish was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When she was two years old, her family moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa. She grew up there with her brother, Tim, and her sister, Robin. Her dad was an English professor at the University of Northern Iowa, and her mom was an elementary school teacher.
Annabeth went to Northern University High School in Cedar Falls and finished in 1989. After high school, she went to Duke University. There, she focused on drama, film studies, and women's studies. She graduated in 1993 with a degree in English.

Annabeth Gish started her acting career in 1986 with a main role in the teen film Desert Bloom. In 1987, she starred in Hiding Out with Jon Cryer. A year later, she played Kat in Mystic Pizza, where she was the sister of Julia Roberts' character. In 1989, she had a big TV movie role in When He's Not a Stranger. She also starred in the comedy Shag that same year.
