Early Life and Dance
Anne Marie Fletcher was born in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up in a town called St. Clair Shores. Anne started taking dance lessons when she was 12 years old. She was inspired after watching her mom take a dance class.
When she was 15, Anne performed in a local show called Salute to the Superstars. After finishing high school in 1984, she moved to Los Angeles, California. There, she trained with famous choreographer Joe Tremaine. She soon began working as a professional dancer. She even performed as a Laker Girl for the basketball team!
Her Career
Dancing and Choreography
In 1990, Anne Fletcher met Adam Shankman when they were both hired to dance at the 62nd Academy Awards. Soon after, Adam asked Anne to be his assistant choreographer. A choreographer is someone who creates dance routines for shows or movies. This was the start of a long friendship and working relationship.
Anne worked closely with Adam as he became a film director. She says that working with him helped her learn how to choreograph and direct movies herself.
Anne first appeared as a dancer in several films. These included The Flintstones (1994), The Mask (1994), and Titanic (1997). Later, she created the dance moves for the movie Boogie Nights (1997). She also choreographed the comedy film A Life Less Ordinary (1997).
Becoming a Director
After working as a choreographer on many films, Anne Fletcher started thinking about directing. Adam Shankman, who had also moved from choreography to directing, encouraged her. She worked with him on films like Hairspray (2007).
Even as she started working in film production, Anne continued to choreograph. She did dance work for movies like Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005).
Anne directed her first movie, Step Up, in 2006. It was a romantic dance film starring Channing Tatum. The movie was very popular with audiences. Anne was offered to direct the sequel, but she said no. She wanted to direct different types of movies, not just dance films. She did, however, choreograph Step Up 2: The Streets (2008).
Her success with Step Up led her to direct the romantic comedy 27 Dresses in 2008. This film starred Katherine Heigl. People loved this movie, and it became a famous romantic comedy. The writer of the film, Aline Brosh McKenna, said that Anne was known as "Mama" on set because she was so good at capturing the story.
Next, Anne directed The Proposal (2009). This romantic comedy starred Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. It was a huge hit! The Proposal is Anne Fletcher's highest-earning film as a director. It is one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.
After these big successes, Anne directed The Guilt Trip (2012) with Barbra Streisand. She also directed Hot Pursuit (2015) starring Reese Witherspoon.
In December 2018, Anne released Dumplin' on Netflix. This movie is about body positivity and mother-daughter relationships.
Most recently, Anne directed Hocus Pocus 2 (2022). This movie is a sequel to the beloved 1993 film Hocus Pocus. It brought back the original stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie was released on Disney+ and was nominated for two Kids' Choice Awards. Anne Fletcher will direct the upcoming Hocus Pocus 3 as well!
