Anne Fletcher's Early Life and Dance Journey

Anne Marie Fletcher was born in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up in a town called St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Anne started taking dance lessons when she was 12 years old. She was inspired after watching her mom take a dance class.

When she was 15, Anne performed in a local show called Salute to the Superstars. After finishing high school in 1984, she moved to Los Angeles, California. There, she trained with a famous choreographer named Joe Tremaine. She then began working as a professional dancer, even performing as a Laker Girl for the basketball team!

Anne Fletcher's Career in Film

Becoming a Choreographer

In 1990, Anne Fletcher met Adam Shankman while they were both dancing at the 62nd Academy Awards. Soon after, Adam hired Anne to be his assistant choreographer. This started a long friendship and working relationship between them.

Anne worked closely with Adam as he became a film director. She says that working with him helped her learn a lot about choreography and directing movies. This helped her become successful in her own career.

Anne first appeared in movies as a dancer. Some of these films include The Flintstones (1994), The Mask (1994), and Titanic (1997). Later, she became a choreographer for movies. She created the dance moves for the drama film Boogie Nights (1997) and the comedy A Life Less Ordinary (1997).

Directing Movies

After working as a choreographer on many films, Anne Fletcher decided to try directing. Adam Shankman, who had also moved from choreography to directing, encouraged her. She worked with him on films like Hairspray (2007) and Step Up.

Even as she started working on the production side of movies, Anne continued to choreograph. She did choreography for films like Ice Princess (2005), The Pacifier (2005), and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005).

Directing Step Up and 27 Dresses

In 2006, Anne directed her first romantic dance film, Step Up. It starred Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. The movie was very popular with audiences. Anne was offered to direct the sequel, Step Up 2: The Streets, but she turned it down. She wanted to direct different types of movies in the future. However, she did still do the choreography for the sequel.

Her success with Step Up led Anne to direct the romantic comedy 27 Dresses in 2008. This movie starred Katherine Heigl and James Marsden. 27 Dresses became a very well-known romantic comedy. The writer of the film, Aline Brosh McKenna, said that Anne was known as "Mama" on set. She praised Anne for capturing the story so well.

Directing The Proposal and Other Films

After the success of her first two films, Anne directed The Proposal in 2009. This romantic comedy starred Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The Proposal was a huge hit and is Anne Fletcher's highest-grossing film as a director. It is one of the top-earning romantic comedies of all time.

Following The Proposal, Anne directed The Guilt Trip (2012) with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. She then directed Hot Pursuit (2015) starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara.

In December 2018, Anne Fletcher released Dumplin' on Netflix. This film is based on a book and stars Jennifer Aniston. It tells a story about body positivity and mother-daughter relationships.

Anne also directed Hocus Pocus 2, which came out in 2022 on Disney+. This movie is a sequel to the classic 1993 film Hocus Pocus. It brought back the original stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy, as the Sanderson Sisters. Anne Fletcher is set to direct the upcoming Hocus Pocus 3 as well.
