Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is a fun mystery and adventure comedy movie from 2004. It's based on the popular cartoon show Scooby-Doo. This film is the second one in the live-action Scooby-Doo movie series. It's a sequel to the first movie, Scooby-Doo, which came out in 2002.

The movie was directed by Raja Gosnell. The story was written by James Gunn. It stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, and Matthew Lillard as the main gang. Seth Green, Tim Blake Nelson, Peter Boyle, and Alicia Silverstone also appear. Neil Fanning is the voice of Scooby-Doo.

Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed was released by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 26, 2004. Even though some critics didn't love it, many fans really enjoyed it. The movie made a good amount of money, but not as much as the first one. Because of this, a third movie that was planned didn't happen. Later, a new TV movie called Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins came out in 2009 with a different cast.

The Mystery Begins

The movie starts at a special event. Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo are at the Coolsonian Criminology Museum. They are celebrating all the mysteries they have solved. The museum is showing off the monster costumes from their past cases.

But the party is suddenly stopped! A mysterious person called the "Evil Masked Figure" appears. This villain uses the reanimated Pterodactyl Ghost to steal two monster costumes. The gang tries to stop them but fails.

Facing Criticism

After the museum attack, a reporter named Heather Jasper Howe makes fun of the gang. She writes bad things about them, making the city of Coolsville turn against them. Shaggy and Scooby-Doo hear the others talking about how they often mess things up. They feel bad, especially about not stopping the Pterodactyl Ghost. So, Shaggy and Scooby decide they want to prove themselves. They want to become real detectives.

The gang thinks an old enemy might be behind this new crime. They first think of Jonathan Jacobo, who used to be the Pterodactyl Ghost. But they believe he died trying to escape prison. Then, they suspect Jeremiah Wickles, who was the Black Knight Ghost. Wickles was also in prison with Jacobo.

Investigating Clues

The gang goes to Wickles' old house. There, they find a book. It's like a guide on how to create monsters! Shaggy and Scooby-Doo also find a note. The note invites Wickles to a nightclub called the "Faux Ghost."

Suddenly, the Black Knight Ghost attacks them! Daphne fights it off. Velma finds its weak spot and stops it. Before the ghost gets away, the gang learns something important from the book. The monsters are made using a special substance called "randomonium." This substance can be found in an old silver mining town.

Daphne, Velma, and Fred go back to the museum with the curator, Patrick Wisely. But they find that all the other monster costumes have been stolen! Meanwhile, Heather Jasper Howe's bad articles make the city dislike Mystery Inc. even more.

Shaggy and Scooby's Mission

Shaggy and Scooby-Doo decide to follow the clue from Wickles' note. This is their first real clue! They sneak into the Faux Ghost nightclub. This club is where many of the criminals the gang unmasked used to hang out.

Shaggy and Scooby wear disguises to try and solve the mystery. They talk to Wickles, who says he has changed his ways. Scooby accidentally causes a scene, and his disguise falls off. The criminals throw them out through a trash chute. On their way out, they see Patrick Wisely acting strangely. He seems to be yelling at someone from his staff.

Shaggy and Scooby then see Wickles leaving the club and follow him. Fred, Velma, and Daphne go to the mines. They find Wickles' plans to turn the mine into an amusement park. They talk to Wickles, who says he and Jacobo hated each other in prison. He also says he has nothing to do with the museum robberies. So, the gang realizes Wickles is not the villain.

The Monster Hive

The gang then finds a secret hideout inside the mines. It's called the Monster Hive. This is where the stolen costumes are being brought to life as real monsters! Shaggy and Scooby play with the machine's control panel. They accidentally bring several monsters to life!

The gang has to run away with the control panel. The Evil Masked Figure and the Tar Monster start to terrorize the city. The gang escapes to their old high school clubhouse. They realize they can change the control panel's wiring to reverse its power. This could turn the monsters back into costumes.

Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby meet Captain Cutler's Ghost. It comes out of the bayou! This forces the gang to go back to the monster-filled mines. Their plan is to put the control panel back and activate it. This should destroy all the monsters.

Unmasking the Villain

In the mines, Velma finds a special shrine built by Patrick. It's dedicated to Jacobo. This makes Velma think Patrick is the Evil Masked Figure. But Patrick proves he's innocent. He helps Velma when a walkway breaks under her.

The gang gathers in the Monster Hive. They confront the Evil Masked Figure. Suddenly, the Tar Monster appears and captures everyone except Scooby-Doo! Scooby uses a fire extinguisher to freeze the Tar Monster. This frees his friends. Scooby then reactivates the control panel. All the monsters turn back into costumes!

The gang takes the Evil Masked Figure to the police. They unmask the villain, revealing Heather Jasper Howe! But Velma pulls off another mask. It turns out Heather is actually Jacobo in disguise! Velma explains that Jacobo survived his fall from the prison wall. He wanted revenge on the gang by making them look bad. Jacobo also framed Wickles by putting the instruction manual and the Black Knight Ghost in his house. Jacobo's cameraman, Ned, is also arrested for helping him.

The sleuths are celebrated as heroes in Coolsville. They celebrate their victory at the Faux Ghost club with the criminals who have now changed their ways.

Special Appearances

Making the Movie

In June 2002, when the first Scooby-Doo movie came out, Warner Bros. said a sequel was being made. They planned for it to be released in 2004. In March 2003, it was announced that the main actors would return for the new movie. These included Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Neil Fanning, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini.

Filming for Scooby-Doo 2 started on April 14, 2003, in Vancouver. Seth Green and Alicia Silverstone joined the cast. The movie's writer, James Gunn, later shared that the original title for the sequel was Scooby-Doo Unleashed.

Watching at Home

Warner Home Video released the movie on DVD and VHS on September 14, 2004. You could buy it in both full-screen and widescreen versions. The DVD had cool extra features. These included deleted scenes, two music videos, and a "making of" special. On November 9, 2010, Warner Bros. released both Scooby-Doo movies together on Blu-ray.

Scooby-Doo Video Games

Two video games were released in 2004 around the same time as the movie. These games followed the movie's story in a fun way. One was a 3D adventure game for computers. The other was a 2D action game for the Game Boy Advance. In both games, you could see a special ending by entering a code shown after the movie credits.

What Happened to Scooby-Doo 3?

In October 2002, Warner Bros. had approved making a third Scooby-Doo movie. Writers Dan Forman and Paul Foley were hired to write the script. But in August 2004, Matthew Lillard (who plays Shaggy) said the third movie was canceled. He explained that Scooby-Doo 2 didn't make as much money as they hoped. He thought it was released at a bad time.

In 2019, writer James Gunn confirmed that he was supposed to write and direct the third movie. But it didn't happen because the second movie, while doing okay, wasn't a huge hit. In 2020, Gunn shared what the story for the canceled movie would have been. The Mystery Inc. gang would have gone to Scotland. A town there was being bothered by monsters. But the gang would find out that the monsters were actually the ones in trouble. Scooby and Shaggy would have to learn to be more open-minded.
