Anne Jeffreys' Life and Career

Early Life and Start in Entertainment

Anne Jeffreys was born Annie Jeffreys Carmichael on January 26, 1923, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. From a young age, she showed a great talent for music. She trained her voice to become an excellent soprano singer.

She even received a scholarship to join the New York Municipal Opera Company. She sang lead roles in famous operas like La bohème and Pagliacci at the well-known Carnegie Hall. However, as a teenager, she decided to try something different and signed up with a modeling agency.

Moving to Movies and Stage

Anne's plans for an opera career changed when she was cast in a musical show called Fun for the Money. This led to her first movie role in I Married an Angel (1942).

During the 1940s, she worked for big movie studios like RKO and Republic Studios. She played the character Tess Trueheart in several Dick Tracy movies. She also appeared in the musical Step Lively (1944) with Frank Sinatra. Anne also starred in the horror comedy Zombies on Broadway (1945) and the film Riffraff (1947).

When her movie career slowed down, Anne focused on live theater. She took on lead roles in Broadway shows. These included the opera Street Scene in 1947 and the musical Kiss Me, Kate in 1948.

Television Success with Topper

Anne Jeffreys found great success on television with her husband, Robert Sterling. They starred together in the CBS sitcom Topper from 1953 to 1955. In the show, she played a playful ghost named Marion Kerby. Her character was so popular that she was introduced as "the ghostess with the mostest."

After Topper, she appeared in other TV musicals in 1955. She also guest-starred with her husband in an episode of Wagon Train in 1957.

Later Television Roles

After a short break in the 1960s, Anne Jeffreys returned to television. She appeared in many popular shows like Love, American Style, L.A. Law, and Murder, She Wrote. She was even nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in The Delphi Bureau (1972).

From 1984 to 1985, she starred in the series Finder of Lost Loves. She also played David Hasselhoff's mother in Baywatch. Anne had a recurring role as Amanda Croft in the show Falcon Crest.

In 1979, she appeared in the science fiction show Battlestar Galactica. She played Siress Blassie and even danced with the famous actor Fred Astaire. She was the last person to dance with him on screen. She also appeared in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

Her most recent work was in daytime television. From 1984 to 2004, she had a long-running role as Amanda Barrington on the soap opera General Hospital. She also appeared in its spin-off show, Port Charles. Her character, Amanda, was a wealthy socialite involved in many storylines at the hospital.
