Antonio Ramon Delgado, born on January 28, 1977, is an American lawyer and politician. He currently serves as the lieutenant governor of New York, a role he has held since 2022. Before this, Delgado was a U.S. representative for New York's 19th congressional district from 2019 to 2022. He made history as the first person of African–American or Latino background to be elected to Congress from Upstate New York. He is also the first Latino person to hold a statewide office in New York.
On May 3, 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she had chosen Delgado to be the lieutenant governor. He was sworn into office on May 25, 2022. Later, on November 8, 2022, Delgado won a full term as lieutenant governor alongside Governor Hochul.

Early Life and Education
Antonio Delgado was born in Schenectady, New York, on January 28, 1977. His parents are Tony Delgado and Thelma P. Hill. He has a diverse background, including African American, Cape Verdean, Mexican, Colombian, and Venezuelan roots. He grew up in the Hamilton Hill area of Schenectady with his three younger brothers.
Delgado attended Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School. He was a talented basketball player there. After high school, he went to Colgate University. He played basketball for the Colgate Raiders men's basketball team. He even played alongside Adonal Foyle, who later became a professional basketball player.
In 1999, Delgado graduated from Colgate. He then received a special scholarship called the Rhodes Scholarship. This allowed him to study at The Queen's College, Oxford, in England. He earned his Master of Arts degree in 2001. Later, in 2005, Delgado graduated from Harvard Law School.
After finishing law school, Delgado moved to Los Angeles in 2005. He worked in the music industry for a while. In 2007, he released a rap album with songs about social issues. He used the stage name "AD the Voice." After his time in music, he worked as a lawyer in New York. He worked for a law firm called Akin Gump.

Becoming a Representative
In 2018, Antonio Delgado decided to run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the whole country. He ran to represent New York's 19th congressional district. He won against six other candidates in the first round of voting. Then, he faced the current Republican representative, John Faso, in the main election.
During the election campaign, Delgado talked about how he disagreed with Faso's vote against the Affordable Care Act. This law helps people get health insurance. Some of Faso's supporters criticized Delgado's past as a rapper. However, Delgado won the election. He received 132,001 votes, while Faso received 124,408 votes. Delgado officially started his job on January 3, 2019.
In 2020, Delgado ran for a second term as a representative. He did not have any opponents in his own party's primary election. He then won against Republican Kyle Van De Water in the general election. Delgado received 192,100 votes, and Van De Water received 151,475 votes.

Becoming Lieutenant Governor of New York

In May 2022, the previous Lieutenant Governor, Brian Benjamin, resigned. The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, then chose Antonio Delgado to become the new Lieutenant Governor of New York. He was sworn in on May 25, 2022.
The Lieutenant Governor is the second-highest elected official in New York State. This person steps in if the Governor cannot do their job. They also help the Governor with many tasks.
Delgado ran for the position again in the 2022 election. He won the primary election with 58% of the votes. He then appeared on the general election ballot with Governor Hochul. They won the election together and started their new terms on January 1, 2023.
In July 2024, Governor Hochul announced she plans to run for reelection in 2026. She said she would keep Delgado as her running mate.
Personal Life
Antonio Delgado is married to Lacey Schwartz Delgado. They got married in 2011. They have twin sons together. The family lives in Rhinebeck, New York, which is north of Poughkeepsie. Delgado is 6 feet 4 inches tall.
