Antonio Ramon Delgado (born January 28, 1977) is an American lawyer and politician. He has been the Lieutenant Governor of New York since 2022. Before this, Delgado was a U.S. representative for New York's 19th congressional district from 2019 to 2022. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Antonio Delgado made history as the first African–American and first person of Latino background to be elected to Congress from Upstate New York. He is also the first Latino to hold a statewide office in New York. In May 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul chose Delgado to be the Lieutenant Governor. He was sworn in on May 25, 2022. In November 2022, Delgado was elected to a full term as Lieutenant Governor. In February 2025, he shared that he would not run for Lieutenant Governor again in 2026. In June 2025, he announced he would run for governor of New York in 2026.

Early Life and Education
Antonio Delgado was born on January 28, 1977, in Schenectady, New York. His parents are Tony Delgado and Thelma P. Hill. He has African American and Latino heritage, including Cape Verdean roots. He grew up in Schenectady with his three younger brothers.
School and College Years
Delgado went to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School. He was a talented basketball player there. After high school, he attended Colgate University. He played basketball for the Colgate Raiders men's basketball team. In 1999, Delgado graduated from Colgate. He then received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at The Queen's College, Oxford, in England. He earned a Master of Arts degree in 2001. Later, in 2005, Delgado graduated from Harvard Law School.
Early Career Paths
After finishing law school, Delgado moved to Los Angeles in 2005. He worked in the music industry for a while. In 2007, he released a rap album under the name "AD the Voice." His music focused on social issues. After his time in music, he worked as a lawyer in New York City. He worked for a law firm called Akin Gump.

How He Was Elected
2018 Election
In 2018, Delgado ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He won the primary election for the Democratic Party. This meant he was the party's choice to run against the current Republican representative, John Faso.
During the election, Delgado spoke about how he disagreed with Faso's vote against the Affordable Care Act. Some groups criticized Delgado's past as a rapper. The New York Times newspaper said these attacks were unfair. Delgado won the election with more votes than Faso. He started his job on January 3, 2019.
2020 Election
Delgado ran for a second term in 2020. He was the only Democratic candidate in the primary election. He won the general election against Republican Kyle Van De Water. Delgado received many more votes and continued his work in Congress.
His Time in Congress
Antonio Delgado was the first person of African–American or Latino background to be elected to Congress from Upstate New York. During his time in Congress, 18 of his proposed laws were signed into effect. These laws helped small businesses, students, and veterans. He also voted to remove President Donald Trump from office in 2019 and 2021. Delgado supported President Joe Biden's plans during the first 100 days of Biden's presidency. Delgado left his role in Congress in May 2022 to become the Lieutenant Governor of New York.
Lieutenant Governor of New York

In April 2022, the previous Lieutenant Governor of New York left office. On May 3, 2022, New York Governor Kathy Hochul chose Antonio Delgado to be the new Lieutenant Governor. He was sworn in on May 25. Delgado is the first Latino person to hold a statewide office in New York.
Delgado won the Democratic primary election for Lieutenant Governor with 58% of the votes. He and Governor Hochul ran together in the general election. They won against the Republican candidates, Lee Zeldin and Alison Esposito.
In July 2024, Governor Hochul announced she would run for reelection in 2026 with Delgado as her running mate. However, Delgado and Hochul had different opinions on some political matters. For example, in July 2024, Delgado suggested that President Joe Biden should not run for president again. Governor Hochul still supported Biden. In February 2025, Delgado also called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign. Governor Hochul's office stated that Delgado did not speak for her administration.
In February 2025, Delgado announced that he would not seek reelection as Lieutenant Governor in 2026. He said he would look into other opportunities. Governor Hochul's office then said she had already started looking for a new running mate for 2026.

In June 2025, Antonio Delgado announced that he would run for governor of New York in 2026. He will try to win the Democratic Party's nomination against Governor Hochul.
Personal Life
Antonio Delgado married Lacey Schwartz in 2011. They have twin sons. Their family lives in Rhinebeck, which is north of Poughkeepsie. Delgado identifies as Afro-Latino. He is African American and has Cape Verdean and Latino family history. He has mentioned that his mother's family has Mexican, Colombian, and Venezuelan roots. Delgado is 6 feet 4 inches tall.
