António dos Santos Ramalho Eanes (born 25 January 1935) is a Portuguese general and politician. He served as the 16th president of Portugal from 1976 to 1986. He played a key role in Portugal's return to democracy after a long period of authoritarian rule.

Early Life and Military Career
António Ramalho Eanes was born on 25 January 1935 in Alcains, a town in Castelo Branco, Portugal. His father, Manuel dos Santos Eanes, worked as a general contractor. His mother was Maria do Rosário Ramalho.
Eanes chose a military career. He joined the army and served for many years. He took part in the Portuguese Colonial War, which involved conflicts in Portugal's overseas territories.
Becoming President of Portugal

Eanes was stationed in Portuguese Angola when a major event happened in Portugal. This was the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974. This revolution brought an end to the authoritarian government in Portugal.
After the revolution, Eanes joined the Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA), which means the Armed Forces Movement. This group was important in bringing democracy to Portugal. When he returned to Portugal, he became the head of RTP, the public television company.
In November 1975, there was a period of political tension. Eanes took charge of military actions to calm the situation. This event is known as the 25 de Novembro. It helped to bring stability to the country after a difficult time.
In 1976, António Ramalho Eanes was elected as the President of Portugal. He was re-elected at the end of 1980. He served two terms as president, from 1976 until March 1986.
After his time as president, he led the Democratic Renewal Party. He also supported the government of the Social Democratic Party. He left his political party role in 1987.
Today, he is a member of the Portuguese Council of State. This is a group of important people who advise the current president. He holds this position because he is a former president.

Family Life
António Ramalho Eanes married Maria Manuela Duarte Neto Portugal on 28 October 1970. She was known as one of Portugal's most active First Ladies. They have two sons together: Manuel António, born in 1972, and Miguel, born in 1977.

In the 1976 election, he won with a large number of votes. This made him the 16th President of Portugal.
