Carlos Alberto da Mota Pinto (born July 25, 1936 – died May 7, 1985) was an important Portuguese professor and politician. He was born in Pombal and passed away in Coimbra.

His Life and Work
Early Life and Education
Carlos Mota Pinto studied law at the University of Coimbra. He earned a special degree called a "licentiate" and later a "doctorate" in legal sciences. He also taught as a professor at the Portuguese Catholic University and other universities around the world. Even today, his ideas are very important in Portuguese law, especially in the area of civil law.
Starting in Politics
After the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, Carlos Mota Pinto helped start a new political party. This party was called the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), which is now known as the PSD. He worked with other important people like Francisco Sá Carneiro to create it.
He was chosen to be a Deputy (a type of representative) in the Constituent Assembly. This group helped write Portugal's new constitution. He also became a Deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, which is Portugal's main parliament. The name of this assembly was actually his idea!
Carlos Mota Pinto and Francisco Sá Carneiro had some disagreements at one point. But they later became friends again. He returned to the party and served as its vice-president in 1983. He then became the President of the party in 1984 and 1985.
Important Government Roles
Carlos Mota Pinto held several key positions in the Portuguese government. From 1976 to 1977, he was the Minister for Commerce and Tourism.
He then became the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1978 to 1979. He was chosen for this role by the President at the time, António Ramalho Eanes.
Later, from 1983 to 1985, he served as the Vice-Prime Minister. At the same time, he was also the Minister for Defense.
Carlos Mota Pinto passed away suddenly in 1985 in Coimbra. This happened just a few days before a big meeting where Aníbal Cavaco Silva was chosen as the new President of the party.
Awards and Recognition
Carlos Mota Pinto received high honors for his service. He was awarded the Grand Crosses of the Order of Christ and the Order of Public Instruction. These are important awards in Portugal.
His Family
Carlos Mota Pinto was married to Maria Fernanda Cardoso Correia. They had three sons:
- Paulo Cardoso Correia da Mota Pinto (born in Coimbra, November 18, 1966) is a professor of law at the University of Coimbra. He is also a well-known publicist.
- Nuno Cardoso Correia da Mota Pinto (born in Coimbra, September 18, 1970) works at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.. He is married to Ianara Pedrosa.
- Alexandre Cardoso Correia da Mota Pinto (born 1971) has a Doctor's degree in Law. He works as a Lawyer and is married to Joana Ferraz.
