Anzac is a small community called a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada. It is part of the Regional Municipality (RM) of Wood Buffalo. You can find Anzac on Highway 881, right next to the east shore of Gregoire Lake. It is about 36 kilometers (22 miles) southeast of Fort McMurray.
Anzac's Story
Anzac got its name during World War I. It was named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, also known as ANZAC. This happened when the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway was being built. The railway connected Carbondale to Waterways.
The community was first called Willow Lake. This was the old name for Gregoire Lake. Many of the early residents were Cree people. Their families had moved to the Athabasca Basin area from what is now northern Manitoba.
During World War II, a road was built from the railway siding. This road helped to build and supply a US Army base on Stoney Mountain.
Over the years, Anzac has grown a lot. This growth is linked to the oil industry and the nearby city of Fort McMurray.
On May 5, 2016, everyone in Anzac had to leave their homes. This was because of the large 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire that was spreading.
