History of Anzonico
Early Beginnings
Anzonico was first mentioned in old records way back in 1226. By 1229, it was known as a Degagna. This means it was a group of farms linked to the bigger area of Giornico.
Church and Community Life
The town was part of the Giornico church area until 1602. That's when Anzonico got its own separate church community. The main church, St. John the Baptist, was first mentioned in 1404. Sadly, an avalanche destroyed the church and most of the town in 1667. But don't worry, it was rebuilt in 1670 in a safer spot.
Farming and Changes
People in Anzonico mostly made a living by farming and raising animals like sheep. Many also left temporarily to find work elsewhere. The sunny hillsides were perfect for growing grapes, and vineyards were common below 700 meters (about 2,300 feet). Starting around 1850, the number of people living in Anzonico began to drop. Many old traditional houses have since been turned into apartments.
