Apron facts for kids
An apron is a special piece of clothing that you wear to protect the front of your body. It's often made from fabric, but can also be made from other materials. People wear aprons for different reasons. Sometimes it's for cleanliness, like restaurant workers who need to keep things very clean. Other times, it's to protect their clothes from getting dirty or even to keep their bodies safe from harm.
Aprons are a common part of the uniform for many jobs. You might see waitresses, nurses, or people who work in homes wearing them. They are also sometimes worn as a decoration, especially by women.
There are many different kinds of aprons, depending on what they are used for. They can be made from various materials. For example, people who work with dangerous chemicals might wear aprons made of rubber. If someone works near radiation, like during X-rays, they might wear a heavy lead apron to stay safe.
Butchers, who cut meat, wear aprons made of metal chains. This helps protect them from sharp knives. Carpenters often wear aprons made of strong leather. These aprons usually have many pockets to hold their tools. Many servants and domestic workers are required to wear an apron as part of their work uniform.
