A Look Back: Arapahoe's History
Arapahoe has a rich history that dates back to the 1870s. It was founded by a group of people who wanted to create a new settlement.
How Arapahoe Started
In the spring of 1871, a group called the Arapahoe Town Company was formed. They wanted to build a town in the Republican River valley. The town was officially surveyed on July 18, 1871. It was named after the Arapaho tribe, a group of Native Americans who used to live in this area.
Early Life and Growth
A post office opened in Arapahoe in 1872. This was important for communication. Soon after, a sawmill and a gristmill were built. The sawmill helped provide wood for building homes and other structures in the new town.
In 1873, Arapahoe was chosen as the county seat for Furnas County. A county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. However, another town, Beaver City, Nebraska, also wanted to be the county seat. After an election and some legal arguments, Beaver City became the county seat in 1876.
News and Communication
The first newspaper in Arapahoe was called the Pioneer, started in 1879. In 1882, another newspaper, the Arapahoe Public Mirror, began. This newspaper is still running today! Over the years, it has taken over other local newspapers, like the Holbrook Observer and the Elwood Bulletin.
In 1904, the Arapahoe Telephone Company was started, bringing phone service to the community.
Building for the Future
During the 1930s, a time known as the Great Depression, a special project helped Arapahoe. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a swimming pool and a sunroom at the city park. This project helped people in the town and provided fun places for residents.
