Khor Virap Monastery
The famous Khor Virap monastery is also in Ararat Province. This ancient monastery is a special place. It is known as the spot where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years. He later became a very important religious leader in Armenia.
Helping the Community
From 1993 to 1995, a group called CYMA (Canadian Youth Mission to Armenia) worked in Ararat Province. They helped the local communities in many ways.
CYMA's Work
CYMA built community centers and fixed schools. They also ran a fun day camp for children. The group gave aid to families who were affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh War. CYMA chose Ararat because of its strong youth groups. The co-founders, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian and Ronald Alepian, saw great potential there.
