Aster oblongifolius Nutt. |
The aromatic aster (scientific name: Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the daisy family, which is called Asteraceae. This plant is naturally found in many parts of the eastern and central United States.
About the Aromatic Aster
The aromatic aster is a type of plant that comes back every year. This means it is a perennial plant. It is also an herbaceous plant, which means it has soft stems instead of woody ones like trees. The plant is known for its pleasant smell, which is why it's called "aromatic."
Where it Grows
This special plant grows in many areas across the central and eastern United States. You can find it in states like Kansas, Ohio, northern Illinois, and hilly parts of southern Illinois. It also grows along big rivers such as the Mississippi River and Illinois River. Other places where it lives include Missouri and along the Ohio River. Its range stretches from Pennsylvania to Nebraska, Minnesota, and Virginia. It is not a very common plant, which makes it even more unique.
Its Scientific Name
For a long time, this plant was known by the scientific name Aster oblongifolius. However, scientists later moved it to a different group, or genus, called Symphyotrichum. This is why its full scientific name is now Symphyotrichum oblongifolium. Even though its official name has changed, many people still refer to it by its older name, Aster oblongifolius.
