History of Arp
The land where Arp now stands was once home to the Caddoan people. This was long before Europeans arrived in America. In 1836, a special agreement called the Treaty of Bowles Village was made. It gave this land to the Texas Cherokee and other Native American tribes.
However, the Cherokee War in 1839 forced these Native Americans to leave. Later, after 1845, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek Indians returned to the area. Today, their descendants form the Mount Tabor Indian Community. Many still live in Smith and Rusk counties.
How Arp Got Its Name
The settlement that became Arp had a few different names over time. At first, in the 1800s, it was called Bissa. This name came from a Choctaw/Chickasaw word for "blackberry."
Later, it was known as Jarvis Junction. Then, it was called Strawberry because many strawberries grew there. Finally, the town was renamed "Arp." This name came from Bill Arp, who was a famous writer and humorist from Georgia. People also say the short name "Arp" was chosen to save time. Strawberry farmers could mark their crates faster with a three-letter name.
