History of Montauban Arrondissement
The Montauban arrondissement was created a long time ago, in 1808. It was one of the first parts of the Tarn-et-Garonne department when that department was formed.
Geography of Montauban Arrondissement
This arrondissement is located in the eastern part of its department. It covers a large area of about 2,117 square kilometers (which is about 817 square miles). It is the biggest of the two arrondissements in the Tarn-et-Garonne department.
Over 175,000 people live here. This means that about 83 people live in each square kilometer.
The Montauban arrondissement shares its borders with several other areas:
- To the north, it borders the Lot department.
- To the northeast, it borders the Aveyron department.
- To the east, it borders the Tarn department.
- To the south, it borders the Haute-Garonne department.
- To the west, it borders the Castelsarrasin arrondissement.
All these bordering departments are part of the Occitanie region of France.
Parts of Montauban Arrondissement
This arrondissement is made up of smaller areas called communes. Think of communes as small towns or villages, each with its own local government.
Cantons and Communes
In France, "cantons" are groups of communes used for elections. Since a recent change, cantons are not always fully inside one arrondissement. This means some cantons might have communes that belong to different arrondissements.
For example, parts of the Beaumont-de-Lomagne, Castelsarrasin, Montech, and Pays de Serres Sud-Quercy cantons are in the Montauban arrondissement, while other parts are in the Castelsarrasin arrondissement.
The table below shows how the communes are spread out in different cantons across the two arrondissements:
