History of Ashford

Ashford got its name from Walter A. Ashford. He was one of the first settlers in the area in 1888. Before that, the land was home to the Upper Nisqually nation. They were a Native American tribe from the Salish group.

A famous building in Ashford is the Ashford Mansion. It was built in 1903. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building.

Where is Ashford Located?

Ashford is in the southeastern part of Pierce County. It sits within the Cascade Range, which is a large mountain range. The community is on the north side of the Nisqually River.

State Route 706 goes right through Ashford. This road is the main way to get to Paradise inside Mount Rainier National Park. The total area of Ashford is about 2.1 square miles (5.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
