A Look Back: Ashland's History
Ashland is located along an old military road. This road connected two forts: Fort Dodge to the north and Fort Supply to the south. In 1870, the U.S. Army built small forts called "redoubts" near Ashland. These were the Bear Creek Redoubt and the Cimarron Redoubt.
The city of Ashland was started in 1884. It was named after Ashland, Kentucky. The first post office in Ashland opened in 1885.
