Ashley Lawrence, born on June 11, 1995, is a Canadian professional soccer player. She plays as a full-back or a midfielder for Première Ligue club OL Lyonnes. She also plays for the Canada national team. Many people say she is one of the best attacking full-backs in the world.

College Soccer Journey

Ashley Lawrence played college soccer at West Virginia University. She was part of the Mountaineers team. During her time there, from 2013 to 2016, she was a co-captain. She also won many awards for her great play.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Club Soccer

While playing for West Virginia University, Ashley also played for other teams. In 2013, she played for Toronto Lady Lynx. In 2014, she joined Ottawa Fury. Both teams were part of the W-League. In June 2016, she played for Vaughan Azzurri in League1 Ontario. This helped her get ready for the 2016 Rio Olympics. She played her first game for Vaughan Azzurri on June 26, winning 9–0.

Playing for Paris Saint-Germain

After finishing college, Ashley Lawrence was a top player many teams wanted. In January 2017, she signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This club plays in France's top league, Division 1 Féminine. In her first season, PSG reached the final of the UEFA Champions League. They lost to Olympique Lyon in a penalty shootout. Ashley was one of the players who successfully scored her penalty kick.

PSG did not play in the 2017/18 Champions League. This was because they finished third in their league. In December 2018, Ashley signed a new, longer contract with PSG. In the 2018/19 season, PSG played in the Champions League again. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Chelsea. Ashley played in four of their six Champions League games that season.

In the 2020/21 season, PSG beat Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals. They also won the French championship, ending Lyon's 14-year winning streak. Ashley played in 20 of 22 league games and 6 Champions League games. PSG reached the semi-finals of the Champions League but lost to FC Barcelona, who went on to win the tournament.

Time with Chelsea F.C.

On July 1, 2023, Ashley Lawrence joined Chelsea. She signed a three-year deal with the club, which plays in the Women's Super League in England. She had played for PSG for six years before moving to London. Ashley scored her first goal for Chelsea on November 4, 2023, against Aston Villa. She played for Chelsea until July 2025.

Joining OL Lyonnes

In July 2025, Ashley Lawrence left Chelsea. She signed a three-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais, also known as OL Lyonnes. Her contract with Lyon will last until June 2028.

International Career for Canada

Ashley Lawrence played for Canada's youth national teams. She was part of the U-17 and U-20 teams. She played in the U-17 World Cup in 2010 and 2012. She also played in the U-20 World Cup in 2014.

Senior National Team Debut

She made her first appearance for the Canada senior team on January 12, 2013. This was against China PR during the 2013 Four Nations Tournament. She also played in the 2013 Cyprus Cup. On November 26, 2014, she started her first game for Canada. It was a 1–1 draw against Sweden. She also played in the 2015 Four Nations Tournament. She started in the 2015 Cyprus Cup final against England, which Canada lost 1–0.

FIFA Women's World Cup Appearances

Ashley was chosen for the 2015 World Cup, which Canada hosted. She started in the opening game and played in all the following matches. In the last group game against the Netherlands, she scored her first international goal, which was also her first World Cup goal. Canada was eliminated in the quarter-finals by England.

After the 2015 World Cup, Ashley played in the 2015 Pan American Games. She was part of the U-23 team. Canada finished fourth in this tournament. In December 2015, she played in a four-nation tournament in Brazil with the senior team, where Canada came in second. She was also part of the team that qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics. She played in almost all games and was named the best left midfielder in the tournament's all-star team. In one game against Guyana, she scored three goals.

Olympic Games Success

In 2016, Ashley was selected for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. She played in all six games and helped Canada win the bronze medal.

On May 25, 2019, she was named to the squad for the 2019 World Cup. She played every minute of Canada's four games. However, Canada was knocked out in the round of 16 by Sweden.

In June 2021, Ashley was chosen for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She played in all six games. On August 2, 2021, she played her 100th international match for Canada in the semi-final against the USA. In the Olympic final, she made a crucial save on the goal line. Canada went on to win the gold medal in a penalty shootout.

At the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, she played in all three group games, the semi-finals, and the final. By reaching the semi-finals, Canada qualified for the 2023 World Cup. However, they lost to the USA in the final.

On July 9, 2023, Ashley was named to the 2023 World Cup squad. She played in all three of Canada's games. Her team was eliminated after the first round by Australia.

Ashley was also called up for the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup, where Canada reached the semi-finals. She was also part of the Canada squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Ashley Lawrence's mother, Tina, is from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father is from Jamaica.
