A Special History
Atlantic Beach is often called "The Black Pearl." This nickname comes from its rich culture. Many of the town's people are Gullah people. The Gullah are descendants of enslaved people who lived on the Sea Islands for hundreds of years. These islands stretch from Wilmington, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida.
In the early 1930s, brave Black men and women opened hotels, restaurants, and shops in Atlantic Beach. They did this even though there were unfair laws called Jim Crow laws that separated people by race. These laws made it hard for Black people to have their own businesses. Atlantic Beach became a special place where Black visitors from nearby states could enjoy the beach and local businesses. People would travel along major roads like Interstate 95 and US 17 to visit.
