North Myrtle Beach is a city located in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. It was formed in 1968 by combining four smaller towns. This city is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Myrtle Beach. It is a very popular place for tourists to visit along the Grand Strand coastline.
In 2020, about 18,790 people lived in North Myrtle Beach. It is part of a larger area called the Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. This whole area had over 449,000 people living there in 2016.

History of North Myrtle Beach
The area now known as North Myrtle Beach has a long history. In 1737, a person named William Gause received a large piece of land, about 250 acres (100 ha), near what is now Windy Hill Beach. He used this land for farming. He also opened a tavern, which was a place for travelers to stop and rest along the old Kings Highway.
North Myrtle Beach officially became a city in 1968. This happened when four smaller towns decided to join together. These towns were Cherry Grove Beach, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, and Windy Hill Beach.
Geography and Location
North Myrtle Beach is in the eastern part of Horry County. It shares borders with Briarcliffe Acres to the southwest and Little River to the northeast.
If you travel on U.S. Route 17, North Myrtle Beach is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Myrtle Beach. It is also about 57 miles (92 km) southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. Using South Carolina Highway 9, it's about 67 miles (108 km) southeast of Interstate 95 near Dillon, South Carolina.
The city covers a total area of about 45.8 square kilometers (17.7 sq mi). Most of this area, about 44.3 square kilometers (17.1 sq mi), is land. The rest, about 1.6 square kilometers (0.6 sq mi), is water.

Interestingly, Atlantic Beach is a small town surrounded by North Myrtle Beach on three sides. It chose to remain its own separate town when the others merged.
