The porkfish, also known as the Atlantic porkfish, is a cool type of fish found in the ocean. Its scientific name is Anisotremus virginicus. It's part of a group of fish called "grunts" because they can make grunting sounds! These fish live in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean.

What Does a Porkfish Look Like?

The porkfish has a body that is tall and flat, like it's been squeezed from the sides. It has a short, rounded head. Its mouth is low down and has thick lips. Inside, it has rows of teeth, with the outer ones shaped like cones.

Porkfish are quite colorful! They have bright yellow and silver stripes all along their sides. They also have two black stripes that stand out:

  • One black stripe goes from above its eye down to its upper lip.
  • Another black stripe goes from the front of its top fin down to the base of its side fin.

Their fins are yellow, and their tail fin is deeply split, like a "V" shape.

Young porkfish, called juveniles, look a bit different. They don't have the two black bars. Instead, they have two black stripes that run sideways along their body. They also have a black spot near their tail and a very bright yellow head.

Porkfish can grow up to about 40.6 centimeters (about 16 inches) long. This is roughly the length of a standard ruler. Most porkfish are around 25 centimeters (about 10 inches) long. The heaviest one ever recorded weighed about 930 grams (just over 2 pounds).

Where Do Porkfish Live?

Porkfish live in the western Atlantic Ocean. You can find them from the coast of Florida all the way south to the Bahamas. They also live in the Gulf of Mexico, including places like the Florida Keys.

They are common throughout the Caribbean Sea. You can find them as far south as Rio de Janeiro in South America. They also live around islands like Fernando de Noronha. Porkfish were also brought to Bermuda and now live there too.

Porkfish Homes and Habits

Porkfish like to live in shallow ocean waters. They hang out around coral reefs and rocky areas. You can usually find them at depths from 2 to 20 meters (about 6 to 65 feet). Young porkfish often hide in beds of sea grass.

These fish are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. During the day, they often swim together in large groups, called schools. Sometimes, they even swim with other types of grunts, like white grunts.

As their name suggests, porkfish can make a grunting sound. They do this by grinding their teeth together!

Porkfish mostly eat small creatures that live on the ocean floor. Their diet includes:

Interestingly, young porkfish act as "cleaner fish." This means they help other, bigger fish by eating parasites off their bodies.

How People Use Porkfish

Porkfish are sometimes caught by people for food. They are not a huge part of commercial fishing, but they are caught using different methods. Some people also enjoy catching them for sport.

You might also see porkfish in aquariums. They are sometimes kept as pets in large fish tanks. People have even managed to breed them in captivity, meaning they can have baby porkfish in aquariums.
