Attica is a town in Wyoming County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 7,702 people lived there.
The Town of Attica is on the northern edge of Wyoming County. Part of a village also named Attica is located within the town. The northern part of the village is actually in a different county, Genesee County.
A big employer in Attica is the Department of Corrections. This is because two state prisons are located here: the maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility and the medium-security Wyoming Correctional Facility.

History of Attica
The Town of Attica was created in western New York in 1802. It was formed from a part of another town called Sheldon. Later, in 1816, a section of Attica was used to create the new Town of Orangeville.
Since the 1930s, Attica has been known as a "prison town." Many of the people who work as correctional officers at the prisons live in Attica or nearby with their families.
A notable event in Attica's history happened on September 9, 1971. More than 1,200 inmates at the Attica Correctional Facility took control of the prison. They were trying to negotiate with authorities to improve their living conditions. The state ended the uprising on September 13, 1971, using armed officers, state police, and the National Guard. It was a tragic event where many people died.
Geography of Attica
Attica is located in western New York. The northern border of the town is also the border of Genesee County.
The town covers a total area of about 36 square miles (93 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The Tonawanda Creek flows through the northwest part of the town.
Several important roads meet in the village of Attica. These include NY-98, NY-238, and NY-354.

Education
Most of the town of Attica is served by the Attica Central School District. However, other parts of the town are included in the Wyoming Central School District, Warsaw Central School District, and Alexander Central School District.
