Early Life & High School Sports
Aubrey Reese was born in Auburn, Alabama. He went to Auburn High School. There, he played both basketball and football. In football, he played as a cornerback, a defensive position. In his final year of high school, he was chosen as a top player for the All-State team in Alabama.
College Basketball Journey
Aubrey Reese decided to play basketball for Murray State. However, he had to sit out his first year because the NCAA (the group that sets rules for college sports) said he wasn't eligible to play due to his grades.
In 1997, he was allowed to play. He wore jersey number 12. In his first season, he played in 33 games, mostly coming off the bench as a substitute. Even with limited time, he was one of the top players on his team for assists.
Becoming a Starter
For the 1998–99 season, Aubrey became a starter. He played in 33 games and started every one of them. He was the best on his team in assists and steals, and second best in scoring and rebounds. He even set a new record for most assists in a home game with 12 assists in 1999. This record was later broken by Ja Morant in 2017.
During the 1999 OVC tournament, Aubrey made a game-winning shot right at the end of the game, called a buzzer beater. This shot helped his team win the OVC title! He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP). His great playing that season earned him a spot on the All-OVC team. He also scored a career-high 26 points in a game during the NCAA tournament.
Senior Year Success
In his final year (1999–2000), Aubrey started all 32 games. He scored a lot of points, averaging over 20 points per game. He reached 1,000 career points in January 2000. He also had his career-high score of 29 points in two different games that season.
Aubrey led the OVC in total points and points per game. He was also third in assists per game. At the end of the season, he was again named to the All-OVC team and was chosen as the OVC Player of the Year. He finished his college career at Murray State with a total of 1,291 points.
