History

Auburn has an interesting past! It was formed in 1882 when two towns, Calvert and Sheridan, joined together. They did this to gain enough votes to become the new county seat. The county seat is the city where the local government offices are located. Before Auburn, the county seat was Brownville, Nebraska.

In 1883, Auburn successfully became the county seat. The city was named after Auburn, New York.

A famous person born in Auburn was Charles Hiram Randall. He was born on July 23, 1865. He was the only person ever elected to the United States Congress as a member of the Prohibitionist Party. This party wanted to ban alcohol.

From 1910 to 1913, Auburn had its own minor league baseball team called the Auburn Athletics. They played in a league called the Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska-Kansas League. Their home games were at Legion Memorial Park. This park is still used today and is a special National Historic Park site. You can find it at 1015 J Street.
