Augst (pronounced Ow-gst) is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Liestal district of Basel-Country, Switzerland. It's famous for being the site of an ancient Roman city called Augusta Raurica.

History of Augst
Augst has a long history! It was first written about in the year 615. Back then, it was called Augustodunensem praesulem. Later, in 752, people started calling it Augusta. The name Augst that we use today was first recorded in 1288.
What is Augst Like?
Augst is a small place, covering about 1.64 square kilometers (which is about 0.63 square miles). A good part of the land, about 34.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 6.7% of the area.
Many buildings and roads take up about 40.2% of the land. Rivers and lakes make up about 17.1%. Augst is located in the Liestal district, right near where the Ergolz river flows into the larger Rhine. It's mostly a linear village, meaning it stretches out along a road or river.

The official symbol, or coat of arms, of Augst shows a red shield with a silver lion's head. The lion has a golden tongue and a golden crown.

Ancient Roman History
Augst is home to the amazing ruins of Augusta Raurica, an ancient Roman city. This site, along with the Villa Clavel auf Castelen, is considered a very important heritage site in Switzerland. The entire Augusta Raurica area is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites, which means it's protected because of its historical value.
