Augusta is a small community in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for the census, but it doesn't have its own local city government.
In 2010, 309 people lived there. By 2020, the population grew slightly to 316 people. Many believe the town was named after Augusta Hogan, who was thought to be the first child born in the area. Her father, J. D. Hogan, was an early rancher. Augusta is also part of the larger Helena area.
The town was officially started on May 8, 1893. A fire on April 4, 1901, unfortunately destroyed some parts of the town.
Geography
Augusta is located in the northern part of Lewis and Clark County. It sits on the north side of Elk Creek. This creek flows from the Lewis and Clark Range mountains and eventually joins the Sun River. The Sun River is part of the larger Missouri River system.
The Augusta area covers about 2.4 square kilometers (or 0.92 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the CDP.
Augusta is a popular starting point for exploring nature. It's a "gateway" to the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Scapegoat Wilderness areas. These are large, protected natural spaces where you can find wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. It's also close to the Lewis and Clark National Forest.
Climate
Augusta has a type of weather called a semi-arid climate. This means it's generally dry, but not a desert. It gets some rain and snow, but not a lot.
