Austin is a city in Lonoke County, Arkansas, United States. It is part of a larger metropolitan area that includes Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Conway. In 2020, about 3,460 people lived in Austin.

History of Austin

Austin first started around 1872. This was when the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad built its tracks nearby. Many people from the original town, called "Old Austin," moved closer to the new railroad. Some even moved their entire buildings!

The new town near the tracks was first called "Austin Station." This helped people tell it apart from the older community. Over time, the new town became known simply as Austin. The original community then became "Old Austin."

Geography of Austin

Austin is located in the northern part of Lonoke County. To its southwest is the city of Cabot. To its northeast is the city of Ward.

A major highway, Interstate 57/U.S. Route 67/167, goes through Austin. You can get on or off the highway at Exit 22. This highway leads southwest to Little Rock, which is the state capital, about 26 miles away. It also goes northeast to Searcy, about 23 miles away.

Austin covers an area of about 3.10 square miles (8.02 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
