The very first Back Yard Burgers restaurant opened on March 21, 1987. It was started by Lattimore M. Michael in Cleveland, Mississippi. At first, these restaurants were only for drive-through customers. Over time, most locations added places where people could sit down and eat inside.

In 2002, Back Yard Burgers almost teamed up with Yum! Brands, Inc.. Yum! Brands owns popular chains like Taco Bell and KFC. However, this plan did not go forward, and the companies decided not to work together.

In August 2007, a group of investors bought Back Yard Burgers. The company's main office then moved from Memphis to Nashville. Over the years, new leaders took charge to help the company grow.

Financial Challenges and Recovery

Back Yard Burgers faced some financial difficulties in October 2012. They had to close about 22 stores in different states. However, by January 2013, the company received new funding from its owners. This allowed them to recover and continue operating.

In July 2017, a company called Axum Capital Partners bought a major part of Back Yard Burgers. This brought new ownership and direction to the chain. In May 2020, Dennis Pfaff became the new CEO.

New Store Designs and Awards

On September 18, 2020, Back Yard Burgers opened a new type of store. This "prototype" store was in Gastonia, North Carolina. It showed off a new design for future restaurants.

In 2022, Back Yard Burgers received a special honor. Newsweek magazine named it one of America's favorite brands. This showed that many people enjoyed their food and service.

In late July 2023, Back Yard Burgers again faced financial challenges. They filed for bankruptcy and closed more restaurants. At that time, they had 20 operating locations. The company successfully emerged from this bankruptcy in December 2024.
