Early Life and Military Training
Bah Ndaw was born on 23 August 1950 in a town called San, Mali. In 1973, he joined the Malian Armed Forces as a volunteer. The same year, he graduated from the Joint Military School in Koulikoro. In 1974, he traveled to the Soviet Union to learn how to fly helicopters.
Military and Political Career
In 1977, Ndaw became a member of the Malian Air Force. He worked for a time as an aide to the Malian President Moussa Traoré. An aide-de-camp is like a personal assistant to a high-ranking official. In 1990, he left this job. He did so to protest against the president's wife getting involved in government matters.
Under President Alpha Oumar Konaré, Ndaw was a deputy chief of staff for the Malian Air Force. This was from 1992 to 2002. In 1994, he finished his studies at the École de guerre in Paris, France. In 2003, Ndaw became the chief of staff of the Malian Air Force. He also served as a deputy chief of staff for the Malian National Guard. From 2008 until he retired in 2012, he led the office for veterans and war victims. He retired with a high military rank called Colonel-major.
On 28 May 2014, Ndaw became the Minister of Defense. He served under President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. During his time as minister, he signed a defense agreement with France. He also worked to reorganize the Malian Armed Forces. In January 2015, he left his position as Minister of Defense. This happened when a new Prime Minister, Modibo Keita, took office. It is believed he disagreed with certain conditions about bringing former fighters back into the army.
Becoming Interim President
On 21 September 2020, Bah Ndaw was chosen as the interim president. This happened after a military takeover a few weeks earlier. A group of 17 people selected him for the role. Assimi Goïta was named vice president. Their temporary government was set to lead Mali for 18 months. This was after the 2020 military takeover. Many leaders and groups supported his appointment as president.
Ndaw officially became president on 25 September. When he took office, he decided his wife would not be called First Lady. He wanted to prevent his family from getting involved in public affairs. As president, Ndaw promised to fight against corruption and cheating in elections. He also promised to honor international agreements. He said he would continue to fight against terrorist groups. He also wanted to stop any abuse of civilians by the Malian armed forces.
He spoke about the importance of managing public money carefully. He said he would work to make sure that those who misuse funds are held accountable. He emphasized that proper management of resources is a must.
After Ndaw became president, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) made a statement. Their president, Jean-Claude Brou, said that ECOWAS would only lift its restrictions on Mali if a civilian Prime Minister was chosen. On 27 September, Ndaw named Moctar Ouane as Prime Minister.
While he was president, there were tensions between his government and the military. This led to rebel soldiers arresting some officials. An opposition group called M5-RFP asked for the temporary government to be replaced. On 14 May 2021, the government announced plans for a new, broader cabinet.
On 24 May 2021, Ndaw and Prime Minister Ouane were detained by the military. They were taken to a military base near Bamako, Mali's capital. The next day, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked for their immediate release. On 26 May, Ndaw announced that he was resigning from his position.
After Being President
On 27 August 2021, Bah Ndaw was released from house arrest. An international group, including representatives from ECOWAS and the African Union, had asked for his release. They welcomed the decision when it happened.

Bah Ndaw has received several honors for his service. He is an officer of the National Order of Mali. He has also been awarded the Medal of Military Merit and the Medal of National Merit.
