Baidu, Inc. (Chinese: ; pinyin: Bǎidù) is a big Chinese technology company. Its name "Baidu" means "a hundred times" in Chinese. The company focuses on internet services and products. It is also a leader in artificial intelligence (AI). Baidu's main office is in Beijing, China. It is one of the largest AI and internet companies in the world.

The Baidu search engine is one of the most popular websites globally. Robin Li started Baidu in the year 2000. Before that, he created an earlier search engine called RankDex in 1996.

What Baidu Does

Baidu offers many different services. These include a search engine for the Chinese language. They also have a mapping service called Baidu Maps. Baidu provides about 57 search and community services.

  • Baidu Baike: This is an online encyclopedia, similar to Wikipedia.
  • Baidu Wangpan: This service lets you store your files online, like a cloud storage drive.
  • Baidu Tieba: This is a discussion forum where people can talk about different topics.

Baidu's Global Products

Baidu also has products for users outside of China. These include keyboard apps like Simeji and Facemoji Keyboard. They also have a platform called popIn that suggests content. OmniAR is an augmented reality network. PopIn Aladdin is a smart projector from Japan. MediaGo is an ad platform that helps Chinese companies reach users overseas.

In 2017, Baidu teamed up with Snap Inc.. This partnership helped Baidu sell ads for Snapchat in places like China, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. This partnership was made even stronger in 2019.

Baidu Around the World

Baidu has the second largest search engine in the world. It holds a large share of the search engine market in China. In December 2007, Baidu became the first Chinese company to be part of the NASDAQ-100 index. This index includes 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

By May 2018, Baidu's market value grew to US$99 billion. In October 2018, Baidu was the first Chinese company to join the Partnership on AI. This group works on making sure AI is developed safely and ethically.
