Baird Bay is a tiny fishing village in South Australia. It is located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Streaky Bay. You can find it on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula. The village sits on the eastern side of a bay also called Baird Bay. This bay opens into the northern part of Anxious Bay.
How Baird Bay Got Its Name
The village of Baird Bay is named after the nearby bay. This bay was named after a person called James Baird. He was an early settler who lived near the shores of Anxious Bay in 1850. Sadly, he died in the area that same year. For a while, the bay was known as Beard's Bay. But on December 5, 1940, its name was officially changed to Baird Bay.
Fun with Wildlife!
Even though Baird Bay is a very small place, it has become a popular spot for tourism. People love to visit because of the amazing Australian sea lion colony there. Local tour guides offer special trips. On these trips, small groups of visitors can go swimming with the sea lions. Sometimes, they even get to swim with Bottlenose dolphins! Many people think it's one of the best places in South Australia for diving or snorkeling. The quiet waters of Baird Bay are also great for recreational fishing.
Life in Baird Bay
Baird Bay is a very isolated place. It does not have many services or shops. There are only a few houses, a place to camp, and a boat ramp. If you need supplies, the closest town is Streaky Bay. That town is about 51 kilometers (32 miles) to the north. In August 2021, a count of the population showed that only 5 people lived in Baird Bay.
