Balta is a small city in North Dakota, a state in the United States. It's located in Pierce County. In 2020, about 66 people lived there.
Balta was started in 1912. It's a popular spot for duck hunting. Near Balta, you can find the Old Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Wrought-Iron Cross Site. This special place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's important for history.

History of Balta
When Balta was first founded, it had a different name. It was called Egan. This name honored Egan Pierce, who was an important person with the Soo Line railroad company.
Later, the people living there decided to change the name. Many of the first settlers came from a city called Balta in the Russian Empire. This area is now part of Ukraine. They renamed their new home Balta to remember their original home.
Geography and Location
Balta is a small city in terms of its size. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 0.25 square miles (0.66 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, and a small part is water.
Center of North America
Did you know that the center of the entire continent of North America is thought to be very close to Balta? The U.S. Geological Survey says it's about six miles west of the city.
However, because Balta is so small, a nearby city called Rugby often calls itself the "center of the continent."
