Bandaru Dattatreya (born 12 June 1947) is an important Indian politician. He is currently the Governor of the state of Haryana since 2021. Before this, he was the 20th Governor of Himachal Pradesh. He has also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Secunderabad area from 2014 to 2019. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Mr. Dattatreya was born in Hyderabad. He earned a science degree from Osmania University. In 1965, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a social organization. He was even put in prison during a tough time in India called The Emergency. In 1991, he was first elected to the Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He has held several important government positions throughout his career.

Early Life and Education
Bandaru Dattatreya was born on 12 June 1947. His parents were Bandaru Anjaiah and Eswaramma. He was born in the city of Hyderabad, which was then part of Hyderabad State. Today, Hyderabad is in the state of Telangana, India.
He studied at Osmania University. There, he earned a B.Sc. degree. This means he studied science subjects at university.
Starting His Political Journey
Dattatreya began his political journey in 1965. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). For a few years, from 1965 to 1968, he worked as a pracharak (propagator) for the RSS. This means he helped spread the organization's ideas.
He also played a role in the Loka Sangarsha Samiti. This group was part of the Jayaprakash Narayan-led Total Revolution Movement. During this time, in the 1970s, he was imprisoned during The Emergency. This was a period when civil liberties were suspended in India.
Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party
In 1980, Bandaru Dattatreya officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This is one of India's major political parties. He quickly took on leadership roles. He was appointed as the general secretary for the BJP's unit in Andhra Pradesh. He held this important position until 1989.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1991, Dattatreya was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time. He won from the Secunderabad constituency. He won against his closest opponent, T. Manemma Anjaiah. At that time, he was the only BJP candidate to win from Andhra Pradesh.
In 1997, he became the president of the BJP's state unit in Andhra Pradesh. This showed his growing importance in the party.
Serving as a Union Minister
After losing an election in 1996, Dattatreya was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998. He won from Secunderabad again. His efforts helped the BJP win more seats in the state.
From 1998 to 1999, he served as a Union Minister of State (MoS) for Urban Development. This was during the second Vajpayee ministry. As a Minister of State, he helped manage important government departments.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha for a third time in 1999. From 1999 to 2001, he continued as Union MoS for Urban Development. This was part of the third Vajpayee ministry. Later, from 2001 to 2003, he became the Union MoS for Railways. In 2003, he was again given the Urban Development role.
Later Political Roles
Dattatreya lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009. However, he continued to hold important positions within the BJP. In 2004, he became the national secretary of the party. He held this role until 2006.
In 2006, he was appointed president of the party's state unit again. In 2013, he became the national vice-president of the BJP.
In May 2014, Dattatreya was elected to the Lok Sabha for the fourth time. He won from the Secunderabad constituency once more. On 9 November 2014, he became a Minister of State for Labour and Employment. He was the only minister from Telangana in the Modi ministry at that time. He resigned from this post on 1 September 2017. After that, he joined the standing committee on Finance.
In 2019, the BJP chose a different candidate for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha elections. Later that year, Dattatreya was appointed the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
On 18 July 2021, Bandaru Dattatreya became the 18th Governor of Haryana.
Personal Life
Bandaru Dattatreya married Vasantha on 17 May 1989. They have three children. Their daughter, Vijaya Lakshmi, got married in November 2016. Sadly, their son, Vaishnav, passed away in May 2018 at the age of 21.
Mr. Dattatreya has also been involved in social work. He served as a joint secretary for the A. P. Cyclone Committee. He was also a general secretary for Voluntary Organisations, India.
Public Image
People often see Bandaru Dattatreya as a calm and respected leader. The Hindu newspaper described him as a "non-controversial and acceptable BJP leader in Telangana." Business Standard noted that he is known for being simple, soft-spoken, and down-to-earth.
