Club History
The club started at the Fábrica Bangu (Bangu Factory) in the Bangu neighborhood. Some British workers, especially Thomas Donohoe, brought football to the factory. They organized the first football match ever played in Brazil! In December 1903, Andrew Procter suggested starting a club. He saw how much his co-workers loved the game.
The club was officially founded on April 17, 1904, and named Bangu Atlético Clube. Bangu was special because it was the first football club in Brazil to have black and mixed-race players.
In 1933, Bangu won its first state championship, the Campeonato Carioca.
In 1966, Bangu won its second state championship. This game was played at the huge Maracana, with over 120,000 fans! Bangu beat Flamengo 3–0 in a memorable match. In 1967, Bangu even played in the United States as the Houston Stars. They finished with four wins, four draws, and four losses. They also had the most fans at their games, with about 19,000 people per match.
In 1985, Bangu was the runner-up in the Brazilian Championship. This big achievement allowed them to play in the Copa Libertadores the next year.
In 2004, Bangu moved down to the Campeonato Carioca Second Level. But they worked hard and returned to the top level in 2009 after winning the second division in 2008.
