Baron of Navan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Barony of Navan was a special kind of noble title in Ireland long ago. It was held by the de Angulo family, who later changed their name to Nangle. The person holding this title was always called a Baron. This title was passed down through the family, but it wasn't the same as being a "peer." This meant the Baron of Navan didn't get a seat in the Irish House of Lords, which was like a parliament.

The title was first given by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, to his trusted friend Jocelyn de Angulo. This happened around the year 1172. Jocelyn probably got his family name from his birthplace, a place called Angle, Pembrokeshire. Other families, like the Nagle and Costello families, came from younger parts of the Nangle family. Jocelyn gained control of not just Navan but also Morgallion and Ardbraccan. Many believe that when he built Navan Fort, it marked the start of the town of Navan.

Early Barons and Challenges

Jocelyn's son, Gilbert de Angulo, became the 2nd Baron. He had a disagreement with King Richard I of England in 1195. Because of this, he lost his titles and lands to the Crown. But later, King John of England forgave him. Gilbert was killed in a small fight around 1212 or 1213.

The Nangle family became quite wealthy and owned a lot of land. However, they didn't play a huge, famous role in Irish history.

Supporting a New King

John Nangle, 16th Baron of Navan, like many other Anglo-Irish nobles at the time, supported a young man named Lambert Simnel. Simnel pretended to be a prince who should be king. After Simnel's side lost a big battle called the Battle of Stoke, King Henry VII of England forgave many who had supported Simnel, including John Nangle. John was known as a brave fighter. He was on the winning side at the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504.

Patrick, the 18th Baron, was involved in a disagreement in 1577. This was about the Crown's (the King's) right to collect taxes to pay for soldiers. Patrick was briefly put in prison for not paying this tax.

Family Connections and Rebellions

Peter Nangle, a younger son of Thomas, the 17th Baron, was part of Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone's group. He played a small part in the events that led to the "Flight of the Earls," when many Irish nobles left Ireland. In the early 1600s, the Nangle family became more powerful by marrying into important "New English" families like the Boltons and Loftuses.

Thomas, the 19th Baron, took part in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. He signed a document called the "Catholic Remonstrance" in March 1642, which was sent to King Charles I of England. Because of this, he was declared a traitor and lost much of his property.

Decline and End of the Barony

Even though his son George, the 21st Baron, got some of the family lands back when Charles II became King again, the family's wealth and power started to fade. John, the 22nd Baron, supported James II of England. After the "Glorious Revolution" (a big change in who was king), John lost his titles, and the Nangles left Ireland for good.

Patrick, the 23rd Baron, became a soldier in the French Army. He supported a person known as the "Old Pretender," who also claimed to be the rightful king. Francis, the 24th and last Baron, spent many years serving in the Austrian Army. He never married and died in Vienna in 1781. When he died, the title of Baron of Navan came to an end.
